Limassol is more than just a coastal hub of food, nightlife and sea views – it’s a great place to start exploring Cyprus. Technically, from Limassol you can visit pretty much anywhere on the island in a day, thanks to Cyprus’s compact size. But in this post, I’ll focus on places that are relatively close to the city and make for easy, fun getaways. As for the Troodos Mountains and more distant regions – that’s a story for another time.
Zygi: seafood by the sea
On the way to Larnaca, about 35 minutes from Limassol, lies Zygi, a small fishing village with a big reputation for food. The harbor is lined with seafood taverns where the fish is as fresh as it gets – think grilled octopus, calamari, red mullet and mezze spreads.
Zygi isn’t about sightseeing or activities. It’s about slowing down, watching the boats come in, and enjoying a long, leisurely lunch with a sea breeze. If that’s your idea of a perfect afternoon, this place delivers.
Kourion archaeological site and beach
Just a 20-minute drive west of the city, Kourion is one of the most spectacular ancient sites in Cyprus. Sitting high on a cliff with sweeping views over the sea, the Roman amphitheater is still used today for concerts under the stars. You can also explore mosaics, bathhouses, and crumbled villas that hint at the city’s former glory.
After walking through the ruins, head down to Kourion Beach, where you’ll find clean water, a wide coastline, and a few relaxed tavernas perfect for a seaside lunch.
Kolossi Castle: knights, sugar and medieval power
Only 15 minutes from the city, Kolossi Castle is a small but striking medieval fortress that played a surprisingly big role in Cyprus’s history. Built in the 13th century by the Knights of St John, it served as a command post during the Crusader period. The current structure dates to 1454 and was rebuilt by the knights after being damaged in conflict.
Kolossi was more than just a military outpost – it controlled nearby sugarcane plantations and acted as an administrative center for the Order. Inside, you’ll find stone halls, a spiral staircase, and arrow slits that once defended against invaders. Climb to the rooftop for wide views of the surrounding countryside, and imagine how powerful this tiny stronghold once was.
Lefkara: lace, silver and quiet charm
Less than an hour northeast of Limassol, Lefkara is a charming village known for its traditional lacework and silver jewelry. The narrow cobbled streets, colorful windows, and laid-back cafés make it a great spot to wander without a plan.
You can browse handmade lace in tiny shops (some run by the same families for generations), visit the small Folk Art Museum, or just enjoy a Cypriot coffee in the village square. It’s especially peaceful on weekdays.
Governor’s Beach: white cliffs and turquoise water
Halfway between Limassol and Larnaca, Governor’s Beach is a favorite among locals. Known for its soft grey sand and unusual white rock formations, it’s a peaceful alternative to the city’s beaches.
There are shallow waters perfect for swimming, a few nature trails along the cliffs, and several tavernas that serve fresh seafood right by the water. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for a simple, relaxing escape that’s close to town.
There’s something special about day trips from Limassol – you don’t need to rush or plan much, but you still get that feeling of discovery. Whether it’s medieval castles, lazy beach days or fresh fish by the harbor, these little escapes remind you how much Cyprus has to offer, even just an hour from the city.
